General Info :

The Team consists of the following staff:

Εv. Ζigouris, Associate Professor

D. Bakalis, Assistant Professor

Εv. Vassalos, Post-Doc Researcher

Α. Kalantzopoulos, Ph.D Candidate

The team also includes M.Sc. students from the postgraduate courses curriculum on “Electronics & Communications” and “Electronics and Information Processing”.

Research Interests :

The Embedded Systems group is working on the design and implementation of high performance control and real-time systems using microprocessors (μPs), microcontrollers (μCs), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs).

Research is mainly focused on :

  • Remote controlled embedded systems. Systems for real-time digital signal and image processing that are controlled via Ethernet/Internet. Development of architectures for remote laboratories with emphasis in Signal Processing Systems with DSPs (R-DSP Lab).

  • Digital VLSI Systems. High-speed arithmetic circuits, CPUs, DSP cores using VHDL/Verilog in FPLDs or ASICs.

  • Low power testing of VLSI digital circuits.

  • Control and Data Acquisition Systems. Systems based on microcontrollers are developed for a large variety of applications.

  • Voice Processing (LP/LD-CELP coding, non-linear filters, etc). New LPC algorithms have been proposed for real-time speech coding. Parts of these algorithms that are time demanding have been implemented on several DSP platforms.

  • Image processing and algorithm implementation concentrating on Image Segmentation and Image Coding.

  • Software / Hardware co-design for telecommunication applications especially focused on real-time voice coding as well as on modems development by means of DSPs.

Experience :

The team has a remarkable experience on the use of CAD software for VLSI design, such as Cadence, and Tanner Tools software. In addition, the team has access to a fully equipped laboratory for computer-based design, measuring, and characterization of analog and mixed signal systems.

The cooperation of ELLAB with Intracom SA, has led to the design and implementation of DSPs (TI), μCs (ARM) and FPGAs systems for telecommunication applications (V.32 and V.34 modems).

Equipment :

The equipment consists of the following :

  • 10 fully-equipped workstations for developing digital signal processing applications using TI’s (Texas Instruments) developing platforms.
    • DSKC6713
    • DSKC6416
    • VDP6437
  • 10 fully-equipped workstations for embedded system development with VHDL/Verilog using ALTERA’s developing platforms.
    • DE2
    • DSP Dev. Kit Stratix II
    • DSP Dev. Kit Stratix II (Prof. Edition)
  • 10 fully-equipped workstations for data acquisition and management system using developing platforms based on ATMEL’s microcontrollers.
  • Data acquisition laboratory equipped with NI’s (National Instruments) data acquisition platforms along with LabVIEW and MATLAB software.
